About the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme and common questions.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is a government-run scheme that provides financial compensation to people who have been seriously injured due to violent crime in the UK.

It covers:

Physical injuries

Sexual or physical abuse

Psychological trauma

Fatal injuries (compensation to dependents or close relatives)

You do not need to know who the offender is or see a conviction for your claim to be successful.

Who Can Apply?

You may be eligible if:

The crime happened in England, Wales, or Scotland

You were injured as a direct result of a violent crime

You reported the crime to the police as soon as reasonably possible (this may be some time later in cases of historical abuse)

You co-operated with the police during their investigation

The incident happened within the last 2 years (exceptions may apply, especially in cases of historical abuse)

You meet the residency or nationality requirements (e.g. British citizen, EU/EEA national, or have settled status)

What Can You Claim For?

Under the CICA scheme, you could be compensated for:

Physical injuries (from minor to serious, including scarring or permanent disability)

Mental or emotional trauma caused by the crime

Sexual or physical abuse, including historical cases

Loss of earnings if you’ve been unable to work due to your injuries

Special expenses, such as care, aids, adaptations, or medical treatment not available on the NHS

Bereavement awards or funeral expenses if a loved one died as a result of a violent crime

How the Process Works?

Report the Crime
You must report the incident to the police. CICA will request a crime reference number and details from the police.

Make a Claim
You can apply directly , or we can use our skill experience and expertise to help prepare and submit your application on your behalf.

Assessment by CICA
CICA will review evidence from the police, medical professionals, and any additional documents you provide.

Receive a Decision
If your claim is successful, you’ll be offered a compensation amount. This is usually a lump-sum payment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will the person who hurt me find out about my claim?

No. The assailant will not be notified about your application. Your claim is handled confidentially by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). CICA deals directly with the police and other relevant agencies, not the offender. Your personal safety and privacy are fully protected throughout the process.

How long does the process take?

On average, most claims take between 6 to 18 months to be resolved.
The time can vary depending on:

The complexity of the case

How long it takes to gather medical and police evidence

Whether you’re still receiving treatment or recovering

In more serious or complex cases (e.g. loss of earnings or ongoing care needs), it may take longer. We’ll keep you informed at every step and help avoid delays where possible.

Do I need a police conviction to apply?

No. You can still receive compensation even if:

The offender was never identified

The offender was not prosecuted

There was no conviction

The key requirement is that the crime was reported to the police and you cooperated with their investigation.

What if the crime happened years ago?

Normally, you must apply within 2 years of the incident. However, exceptions are often made for:

Historical sexual abuse or domestic violence

Cases where your injuries (especially psychological) delayed your ability to apply

If you're unsure whether you’re still eligible, speak to us—we can help assess your case.

Can I apply on behalf of someone else?

Yes. You can apply:

On behalf of a child under 18

For a loved one who died due to a violent crime

As a legal guardian or representative of someone unable to apply themselves (e.g. due to mental capacity or serious injury)

Do I need a solicitor or legal advisor to apply?

You don’t have to use one, but many people find it helpful—especially for more complex claims. We can help you:

Understand what you may be entitled to collect strong supporting evidence Submit a clear and well-documented claim

Appeal if the outcome is unfair

We offer straightforward, friendly support and will only proceed if we believe you have a strong case
